Description of organization

The Department of Meteorology was founded in 1954 within the Faculty of Forestry to improve the understanding of atmospheric processes and their interaction with the biosphere. In 1968 it was incorporated into Hydro Sciences and is now part of the Faculty of Forest, Geo and Hydro Sciences. Research focuses on the climate system with its complex interactions and feedbacks. This includes process oriented studies to understand nature through analysis and model building. Here the common research mission at the Department of Meteorology is “Surface-Atmosphere-Interaction” with the necessary resolution, i.e. a microscale to mesoscale resolution.

Expertise and experience of the organization

Since mid of the 1990ties the scope of the Department of Meteorology at the Technical University Dresden was considerable enlarged, remote sensing and boundary layer modelling became additional important research areas. Nevertheless, research and teaching remain equally important tasks of all members of the department. Teaching includes training and supervision of about 15 PhD students. The Department of Meteorology has also considerable expertise in data banking, data evaluation and data presentation (e.g., climate data bank of eastern Germany or climatological atlas of Saxony).Currently the group operates 7 Eddy Covariance sites continuously over forests, crop rotation, grassland and peatlands.
